She blinked.
She blinked again hoping to bring the situation into focus. Nothing changed. Her mind stayed blank and only dark space surrounded her.
Pin-pricks of light, almost like stars, provided a warped version of illumination. There appeared to be no ground, and no sky. But most startling of all was the white door hanging in mid air in front of her. It had no handle, but an intricate twisting design instead.
Totally baffled, she shoved her hands into her pockets. Instead of curling around lint, her fingers brushed against paper. Momentarily distracted, she pulled out a tattered December 2011 calendar page with every Wednesday and Saturday circled in pen. A second page only contained the words Tokyo and Zephyr.
The words filled her with a sudden sense of urgency. Agitated, she pushed dark hair back from her face. Her eyes caught on a winding design inked into her hand. She studied the design at arm length, eyes tracing the black twists and curls with a growing sense of apprehension. The tattoo didn't feel right, as if it was something foreign trying to integrate itself into her very being. Twisting her wrist back and forth she tried to make sense of the ink. Nothing came to her. Frustration coiling in her stomach, she refocused on the door suspended in front of her. It was such a pristine white. Her eyes traveled over the intricate pattern before she noticed a blank spot in the middle of the door. Her hand was reaching to touch it before she could think about why. On contact, the door snatched the warm from her fingertips. She tried to pull away from the shock of it but was caught. Panicking, she tugged at her hand but it wouldn't come loose from the door. Suddenly the door pulsed with a blue light. The design on the door illuminated, connecting with the lines of her tattoo now also glowing blue. The stars around her quickly faded as the door became gradually brighter. The light stung her eyes. Snapping them shut, she felt a sharp tug and found herself falling through the door.
